Lindsay started his career over 30 years ago playing his first show as a drummer aged 10. In his early teens he travelled as a roadie with Brian Young as part of his touring country music show that was a vital training ground for many young up and coming Australian artists. At 15 he was invited to tour 11 months of the year, performing up to 7 nights a week as the full time drummer where the late great Jimmy Little who took the youngster under his wing.
“I was in a really cool period with Brian where he had Jimmy Little on tour with him. I roomed with Jimmy for two tours – I was so young and Jimmy being so respectful he said ‘I’ll take the young fella’. I met Troy Cassar-Daley at a young age as well as Beccy Cole and so many other wonderful musicians. Because we travelled 11 months of the year all around Australia, it was like an apprenticeship and help my career so much”.
It was during the Youngie tour that Lindsay picked up the guitar and taught himself to play. Despite being left-handed and all the guitars being right handed – he persisted - and Lindsay is now known for his unique style of playing upside down.
“There was often no TV on tour, so the other band members let me play around with their guitars and mandolins to pass the time. I tried to play right-handed and it just didn’t happen. I would play right handed instruments upside down and just adapted to it”.
After mastering the guitar, Lindsay taught himself to play as many other instruments as he could including bass, dobro and mandolin. He is now regarded as one of the best multi instrumentalists in Australia.
Lindsay is a four-time CMAA Golden Guitar Awards finalist, named Queensland Musician of The Year on ten occasions, has been a finalist for the Gold Coast Music Awards three times for Musician of The Year and Inducted into the prestigious Australian Country Music Hands of Fame in 2019. The awards and nominations both at home and internationally are endless and are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to highlighting his incredible talent.
Lindsay’s collaboration with the iconic Australian songwriter, Allan Caswell - Lynchburg – has seen him step out of his comfort zone and feature on vocals. Born out of the Covid lockdowns the pair decided to spend their time writing and recording music. The result has produced many releases and chart hits for Lynchburg.
“My wife has always been onto me to sing more but I’m not really big on it, but Allan’s been very supportive and we’ve been writing songs. The songs I’m doing now I like because they are stories and ones that are close to my heart - I’m happy to sing them so Lynchburg has been a great thing for that”.
As a musician, producer and engineer, Lindsay’s talents can be heard on recordings by artists including John Williamson, James Blundell, Allan Caswell and Brian Cadd to name just a few.
The prolific artist never takes his successful career for granted though, and is continually blown away that he gets to play music everyday for a living.
“I just love playing music and I’ve been very fortunate because I just live in my own little world and just do my own thing”.
